Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in August 2020, but was rewritten with new photos in July 2026. Now for the post! Yesterday (uh, 2020 yesterday, that is) on The Independent Edition we saw the
Golden Apple Tree Supermarket at 745 Westchester Ave. This store was a Bravo from 1998 until 2014, when it switched to Key Food (and then an independent banner, Golden Apple Tree, that was still supplied by Key Food). In 2019, this store returned to Bravo, and it doesn't look like ownership actually changed during any of those. Before this all, the store was a Fedco Foods back in the 1960s and then opened as a CTown in 1984.
It looks like this store got a pretty major renovation in the switch from Bravo to Key Food, around 2014, and when I returned in 2023 it was in the process of another, smaller renovation. So we're going to start with a look at this Bravo in 2023 when it was getting remodeled, then a look at the finished product just below.
Produce and deli are up front in the front-right corner, with meats in the rest of the first aisle and then continuing across the back wall. Frozen and dairy are on the left side of the store. It's a somewhat unusual shape because of the fact that Westchester Avenue is kind of diagonal, so the block this store is on is actually a triangle. All in all, it looks like this store is around 10,000 square feet.
I haven't seen too many pictures of the interior of the store prior to this remodel, but it looks like the big change was that the
drop ceiling was removed.
You can clearly see that there was work ongoing to the ceiling when I took these pictures back in 2023. Now, in the more recent set, the work has been completed. There's some new wood paneling on the walls and others have been painted, with the exposed ceiling now painted black and new aisle markers hung.
The rear part of the store always seems to have had an open ceiling, and it doesn't look like that half got matching paint in the remodel.
There's not a lot of renovating you
can do to these small urban stores, other than the fixtures, flooring, and lighting since there's not really much room for decor or major layout changes. So, since the 2014 or so remodel wasn't all that long ago, not much had to be done more recently.
But I like the fresh look and it's nice to see continued investment in this decades-old supermarket!
