Here's a glimpse of the old A&P sign out at Broad and Pearl, taken in 1994. (Read more here!) Now for a look at the Supremo in 2025...
Supremo's footprint is slightly smaller than A&P's, as the space was subdivided between Supremo and Rite Aid (now Walgreens). The full building is around 35,000 square feet, and Supremo is around 23,000 square feet.Supremo has recently replaced the lighting in this store, but it hasn't really changed much in the last 15 years or so. It's in excellent shape, considering that. Some of the fixtures may have been left over from A&P, but it looks like a lot was new either when Supremo moved in or in one of their renovations, of which they did at least two.
Produce is in the front half of the first aisle, with packaged meat in the back half. The back-right corner is home to a butcher and seafood counter, with dairy on the rest of the back wall. Frozen foods in the last aisle on the left side, and deli in the front-left corner.
The grocery aisles are in typical Supremo fashion, with awnings over the lighting at the top. Supremo stores tend to be very similar, despite the fact that the chain runs a somewhat random collection of former big chain stores.
Customer service and deli are on the front wall in the front-left corner.
Supremo is independent and supplied by UNFI, and uses Essential Everyday and Wild Harvest products. Until 2014, they were supplied by White Rose.
Dairy and frozen in the last aisle. These cases may have been new when Supremo moved in, or maybe they're older and refurbished.
Supremo is a chain of 14 stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and you can see some of their other locations here.
Deli and baked goods (no in-store bakery) in the front-left corner. This store previously had a hot food bar, but it's been removed.
A look across the front-end with some very bright new lighting. As you can see, the store is in good shape even though it's been a little while since its last renovation. I like these aisle markers.
One more shot showing the whole strip mall, including that sign out by Broad Street that used to have a Sav-A-Center logo at the top. Incidentally, this picture was taken by a family member out of one of the windows at Trinitas, the hospital across the street that replaced the brick hospital building you can see in the 1994 picture.
That's all for this Supremo! Supremo also owns another supermarket in Elizabeth, the CitiGrocer about half a mile east out on Route 1. Between the two, there are a few small supermarkets on Elizabeth Avenue and some smaller grocers in the neighborhood.
