Key Food Marketplace
This store is a bit under 20,000 square feet even after a couple expansions, though there's also a basement. Inside, it's seriously old-school with the retro decor still going strong. Produce is in the first aisle on the right side, with dairy on the back wall. Meats are in the last aisle, and deli-bakery is in an alcove in the front-left corner that appears to be an expansion. Frozen foods run along the front wall to the left of the registers. The store is oriented to face the street, so the front-end lines Forest Avenue instead of facing the parking lot.
Though Dan's Supreme has some very attractive stores, maintenance seems to have slipped at some of the locations recently. We can see that this is an old building, and while it generally seems to be in decent condition, we'll see a lot of problems like burnt-out lights.
Another Key Food affiliate is across West Brighton, a new Food Dynasty.
It's fun to see well-preserved supermarkets like this, but it also seems like it's time for a refresh here. Then again, there's not a lot of competition in the immediate neighborhood, so maybe there's not really a reason to.
Opened: 1990
Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in January 2018, but was rewritten with new photos in June 2026. Now for the post! We're here to see a very old-school Key Food, which dates back to 1959 when it was a Food Farm supermarket (I don't really have any info on them, unfortunately). Just four years later, the space became a Bohack -- an NYC chain that's now long gone -- which closed in 1975. In 1977, it reopened as a Majors Supermarket owned by Dan's Supreme, and in 1990, Dan's Supreme left Majors and joined Key Food.Owner: Dan's Supreme Supermarkets
Previous Tenants: Food Farm (1959-1963) > Bohack (1963-1975) > Majors Supermarket (1977-1990)
Cooperative: Key Food Stores
Location: 450 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY
