Three in one today! The Market Report visits the three Market Baskets of Haverhill, the biggest supermarkets in the city whose downtown is just two miles from the New Hampshire border. This is our first stop, which at nearly 85,000 square feet is the largest Market Basket in town. This store opened around 2010 in a former Kmart, moving from a smaller ca. 1960s store on the same property. The interior? Classic Market Basket, of course.

Moving on to the downtown store about two miles east. This one has been a Market Basket since the building was constructed in the early 1970s, and although the facade has clearly been updated, it wouldn't surprise me if that's the original neon sign. At around 40,000 square feet, it's on the smaller side. Here's a look at the interior via Google Maps...

One final store, and this one certainly looks familiar (see Salem, for instance). This one was built in the late 1980s and is also on the smaller side, around 45,000 square feet. It backs up to the Merrimack River, which cuts through the city of Haverhill and here divides it from the neighboring town of Groveland. It's a beautiful, scenic river. That's from the bridge right behind this store.
It looks like there was a department store at the other end of this mall, which is now a self storage facility. That building is close to 100,000 square feet, so I wonder if there was ever an idea that Market Basket could relocate into that space for a larger store. There's not much room to expand this existing store.
The interior of this store is completely different from every other Market Basket ever. Just kidding. But hey, if it ain't broke...
That's all for today's look at the Market Baskets of Haverhill, MA, and tomorrow we'll round out the week with a look at a handful of independent grocers in this area!
