In addition to the Main Street Grocery and the Rising Tide Co-op, Damariscotta has a big chain supermarket: a roughly 60,000 square foot Hannaford built in the early 00s. I don't know if this replaced an older Hannaford in town or in the area, but I can't find evidence of that. It's on the larger side for Hannaford, but given that we're in Hannaford's home territory here, that makes sense. I didn't go in -- Hannaford stores generally aren't that exciting -- but the inside looks both quite nice and just like every other Hannaford. Speaking of Hannaford, that's the dominant chain in this part of Maine, so check out another one about eight miles northeast here, and tomorrow, we're headed up to Rockland!

  1. One possibility (but I don't know if it is or not) is that there was a smaller store somewhere in town that was independently run but using Hannaford as a supplier. That would have been under the Shop 'n Save label (see other reply). If that owner wanted to get out, Hannaford may have purchased it and then moved to open this newer/larger spot.
If that was the case, that older store could look like anything, as is often the case with the independent stores, may not look much like a regular supermarket.

I suspect there is no evidence of anything on this spot previously? Only thinking another option, that it could have been a small building and rebuilt to this one, even totally replaced (like the older smaller building sitting where parking is now).
Thinking since one store here that was independent (and then under Supervalu supply) did that, it later switched to Shop 'n Save and is now Hannaford owned.
