Welcome back to 616 Melrose! We last visited this spot back in January, when I stopped by to see it in progress as it transitioned from an Associated to an Antillana SuperFood. Associated is still making its presence known here, though, as the storefront includes the distinctive red, white, and blue A logo next to the Antillana name.
Prior to Associated, it was a Pioneer. Lots more history on that January post linked above. Now, the store has reopened (not sure if it's simply rebranded or under new ownership) after a significant renovation. Let's check it out!
The basic layout is the same, but some changes have been made. For example, here in the first aisle, produce still lines one side, but now it's the right side instead of the left side with sale items opposite. Butcher is in the back-right corner, with meat on the back wall and dairy/frozen on the left side. A small deli is in the front-left corner.
The sales floor spans only around 7000 square feet, so there's not a lot of space to work with.
The flooring has been replaced, as well as most of the fixtures and everything else has gotten a fresh paint job.
The fast-growing Antillana group (which also includes Extra Jumbo and Shop Fresh stores) don't appear to all be under the same ownership, but many of them are owned by Jose Grullon. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to confirm with complete certainty just which ones are and which ones are owned by others. A recently-opened Shop Fresh in the northern Bronx is owned by Neidy Marte.
As I mentioned on the previous post, the store wasn't in bad shape before, but has been significantly fixed up.
The renovations included replacing all of the grocery shelving.
It's still a brand-new store, but if the owners keep it as clean and orderly as this, that'll be a good sign for this store.
Like the produce department, a minor switch in the last aisle moves frozen from the outside to the inside of the aisle, and dairy to the outside from the inside.
You can also see that even the lighting was replaced in the renovation. Although this is an old building, it's practically a brand-new store.
A small deli is in the front-left corner of the store. I don't have a picture of the deli before, though.
And these days, the front-end is a bit more cluttered but much more modern.
In addition to this store and the Shop Fresh I mentioned, ASG has had a few other recent notable openings. This weekend, we're also taking a look at one other, along with other new NYC supermarkets!
