Super Natural Produce Owner: Leopoldo Sanchez Opened:  2016 Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  824 Pittston Ave, Scranton, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Here we are at the second, newer, and larger Garcia Market location diagonally across the street from yesterday's store . This store became Super Natural Produce -- whose Reading location we saw a while ago -- in 2016. But the store goes way back, actually all the way to 1937, when it was constructed as an ACME, and its grand opening ad advertised Christmas trees for 50 cents. Or two pounds of grapes for 15 cents. This was the first "supermarket"-style ACME in the Wyoming Valley, a self-service store where customers rolled around their own shopping carts to the various departments of the store. According to the Scranton Times-Tribune, the store "represented a great leap forward...it offered convenience and things not usually found in smaller stores," but a 1995 opinion piece noted that "some pe...

The roughly 1,000 square foot space held several tenants over the years -- a furniture store in the 1940s, a florist in the 1960s, and a hair salon in the early 1990s -- before becoming Garcia's Market in 1999. Garcia's opened a second store diagonally across the street at 901 Pittston at some point, which later became a Super Natural Produce. Last week we saw the brand-new Astor Place Wegmans , which opened Wednesday. On Thursday, an ALDI opened in the Bronx and on Friday, the SuperFresh in Middlesex opened along with the ACME in East Norriton, PA. So far I've only been to the Wegmans and the SuperFresh, but both are very impressive stores and I'm excited to show you all these two new stores. We've seen the Middlesex location plenty of times, most recently just a few days ago before it opened and while, unfortunately, I was out of town for the weekend so I couldn't be there right away for the opening, we're seeing it just a few days later, so that's pretty good.
