Original Grocery Tenant: Big V ShopRite Address: 400 NY-211, Middletown, NY Opened:  1990s Closed:  2007 Later Tenants:  Big Lots Photographed:  February 3, 2021 This 50,000 square foot supermarket was built in the 1990s as a Big V-owned ShopRite, relocating from a beautiful store of half that size down the street. In 2001, ownership was transferred to SRS when Big V went bankrupt. This store was relatively short-lived, having closed in 2007 when ShopRite moved into a former Stop & Shop, directly across the street from their old location. On Flickr, Jack Thomas captured this store several times in its history, including with its original facade and after a renovation . Also of note is that a location was built to replace this store , but when Stop & Shop closed very close to this store, ShopRite moved there instead. Original Grocery Tenant: Big V ShopRite Address: 303 NY-211, Middletown, NY Opened:  1950s Closed:  1990s Later Tenants:  non-grocery tenants Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Welcome to Middletown, New York's first ShopRite! The store opened in the 1950s with a beautiful sweeping arched roof and an all-glass front wall, which amazingly is pretty intact these days . The 24,000 square foot store, as far as I can tell, was built as a ShopRite owned by Big V and then closed in the 1990s when Big V moved down the street to a much larger, new-build location. That's what we'll be seeing tomorrow!

Wurtsboro G-Mart Owner: Jim Gutekunst Opened:  1999 Cooperative:  IGA Location:  2390 US-209, Wurtsboro, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 In a town of just 1100 people, this independent supermarket has been here for almost 25 years. It appears to have been built as the Wurtsboro G-Mart back in 1999, and G-Mart is affiliated with IGA. The store is not that big -- just about 12,000 square feet -- and interestingly, uses the same decor as the Peck's Market in Eldred . The only relation I can come up with is that they are both IGA stores, so it's possible this was decor supplied to operators by IGA or a local distributor or affiliate. Produce is in the front right corner of the store, with dairy continuing down the first aisle. Meat and deli are on the back wall, with bakery and frozen foods in the last aisle. Rock Hill Trading Post Owner:  Daniel Resnick Open:  2021 under current ownership Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  214 Rock Hill Dr, Rock Hill, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 The Rock Hill Trading Post is a roughly 10,000 square foot combination supermarket, hardware store, and general merchandise store -- basically a modern-day general store. And, as you can tell from the outside picture, it's a Key Food! The store was purchased by the Resnicks, who also owned the Liberty Market and the Apollo Plaza , in 2017. They renovated the store and joined Key Food after they took over, but the general-store feeling is maintained. We enter to produce, with Scrabble tile-inspired signage, in the middle of the store. The supermarket is on one side with the hardware store on the other, and we'll check out both. The hardware store is affiliated with Ace hardware. Original Grocery Tenant: none; supermarket previously planned Address: 99 E Broadway, Monticello, NY Opened:  n/a Closed:  n/a Later Tenants:  vacant Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Welcome to... not a grocery store! The Apollo Plaza just outside of Monticello, NY, was constructed in 1983, bringing around 200,000 square feet to eastern Monticello. It quickly declined for several reasons, and the final tenant moved out just 20 years later. Any number of proposals have been made over the years, and it's been sold repeatedly, but no real movement has happened. I thought the expansive parking lot and wide mall storefronts looked particularly eerie with a coating of snow over everything. I always like to see abandoned things, especially large ones like this, but it must be an eyesore for locals. ALDI Opened:  before 2009 Previous Tenants:  unknown Location:  121 Broadway, Monticello, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Just outside of downtown Monticello is a roughly 18,000 square foot ALDI, located in what I believe to be half of a former supermarket. I suspect this was the original ShopRite in town, with the current store being built in the early 1980s. From Historic Aerials, though, we can tell this store isn't that old, having been built between 1966 and 1987. That means it isn't all that much older than the ShopRite, so maybe this was some other supermarket -- or maybe the ShopRite was built as a different store. There's something else in Monticello I wanted to take a look at before we leave -- but for once, it's not a grocery store! Check it out in a bonus post tomorrow on Grocery Archaeology .

Original Grocery Tenant: Great American Address: 396 Broadway, Monticello, NY Opened:  before 1980 Closed:  after 1980 Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Today's post is a very quick one, with a look at a 15,800 square foot former Great American supermarket in downtown Monticello. The setup, too, is a bit like a Grand Union with its angled parking spaces and downtown location, but I don't know whether this was ever a Grand Union. But in 1980, this was a Great American, a New York cooperative or chain of supermarkets. There's only one left -- up in Prattsville, roughly 50 miles north. ShopRite of Liberty Owner: SRS Opened:  2001 under current ownership, between 1976 and 1983 previously Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  46 Thompson Sq, Monticello, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 With SRS-owned ShopRites closing in the Capital Region and Ellenville , I've been keeping an eye on the performance of other stores. This 54,000 square foot ShopRite in Monticello opened owned by Big V between 1976 and 1983, then during Big V's bankruptcy in 2000-2001 was transferred to SRS. This store has seen a distinct lack of updating over the years, and even its most recent renovation (probably around 2010) only the grand aisle was updated -- and that, only a little bit. I'm keeping an eye on this, for that reason. It's possible the store could be headed for closure, but it didn't seem that way to me. It's possible SRS is looking to replace the store with a new-build one nearby, or there's some other reason it hasn't...
