540 W Boylston St, Worcester, MA

Original Grocery Tenant: Fortin's Market Address: 540 W Boylston St, Greendale, Worcester, MA Opened:  between 1969 and 1972 Closed:  between 2000 and 2009 Later Tenants:  Dollar Tree Photographed:  January 28, 2020 Welcome to the former home of Fortin's Market, a 20,000 square foot independent grocer right along the main business corridor of Greendale. The store opened around 1970 and actually made it all the way past 2000, if the city directories are correct. (By 2007, the store was subdivided into a Halloween Outlet and several smaller businesses.) Eventually, the Halloween Outlet moved to a smaller space in the building when Dollar Tree took the main space and then closed. But even with all the shuffling, a few Fortin's signs remain on the right side of the building... I assume the painted signs are original to the store's opening, and the lower sign is probably newer but still has been there for several decades. (As of my last time passing by this building in ...

Stop & Shop's 2024 Store Closures: The Full List

The last of Stop & Shop's stores closing in 2024 are slated to close this Thursday, on Halloween. Over the last several weeks, I've posted about most of the stores that are closing with tours and, where applicable, a look at what's come into the space following Stop & Shop's departure. I've been hoping to document as many as possible before they close and are gone forever, even those that will continue to operate as supermarkets, to capture what they looked like in their final years... or even days. Here's the complete list, once again, along with links to my coverage of each location. Make sure to read up if you haven't been following all along! This list last updated:  July 17, 2026 Connecticut Ansonia, CT: 100 Division St See my coverage here. Closing date: October 31, 2024 No future tenants announced yet. Danbury, CT: 72 Newtown Rd Closing date: October 31, 2024 ShopRite coming soon. Milford, CT: 855 Bridgeport Ave See my coverage here. Closing d...

Special Report: Stop & Shop (closing) - Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

Stop & Shop Opened: 2011 Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets > Norkus Foodtown (closed 2011) Cooperative:  none Location:  505 Richmond Ave, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ Photographed:  December 22, 2021 Closing Date: October 31, 2024 It's time for a look at one of the smallest Stop & Shop stores out there! The store measures just around 18,000 square feet, although there may be additional space on the second floor or in the basement for backrooms, storage, offices, and the like. It dates back to the early 1930s when the space was constructed as a theater, then by the 1940s or 50s, it had become an ACME. Here's an awesome 1958 picture of the ACME, and you can read through the comments for more details there. By the 1980s, it became a Foodtown owned by the Norkus family, and ultimately, became a Stop & Shop in 2011 when they acquired Norkus Foodtown . Since the conversion was pretty recent, you can actually see a picture of the sto...

Stop & Shop Opened: 2001 Owner:  Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants:  Edwards (1998-2001) Cooperative:  none Location:  1278 US-22, Phillipsburg, NJ Photographed:  September 19, 2018; October 15, 2018; June 25, 2019; March 27, 2020; August 30, 2020; and October 20, 2024 Contributor:  Lucas F. Closing Date: October 23, 2024 Stop & Shop has a few stores that are really far from the rest of their store base, and one of those is closing -- the location in Phillipsburg, NJ, right on the border of Pennsylvania. Here, we're just two miles to Pennsylvania, and five miles to the nearest Giant Food Store , but about 20 miles to the nearest Stop & Shop (in Flemington, NJ ). This store is about 60,000 square feet and was built as an Edwards in 1998, converting to Stop & Shop three years later. Stop & Shop renovated it shortly after moving in, but they used a no-frills version of the Taste & Table decor package . This version of the decor package h...
