Now for the post! Welcome to one of the larger supermarkets on Staten Island, a roughly 62,000 square foot ShopRite at Forest and Richmond in the Graniteville section. It was a new-build store around the mid-1990s, got an exterior remodel around 2015, and then got an interior remodel around 2020.
You enter on the left side of the store to the produce department, with deli and seafood at the back. Meat lines the rest of the back wall, with beer and milk in an alcove in the back-right corner. Frozen and dairy are on the right side of the store, and bakery is in the front-right corner. There was previously a pharmacy here that closed in or around 2021, but I'm not sure where in the store it was located exactly.
This latest remodel was extensive -- here's a look at what the store looked like before -- but I would say not particularly successful. Instead of looking sleek and modern, the interior just looks unfinished with the polished concrete floor and white walls and high open ceilings. The good news is that the owners of this store seem to recognize that, and their newest location on Staten Island has a very different decor package.
The interior almost looks more like a Costco or Walmart than a typical supermarket. Around the same time this store was redone, the Western Beef just across the street also got a remodel. That looks much more like a standard grocery store. Still, this is a large and apparently high-volume supermarket, so decor probably isn't the first concern.
It looks like many of the fixtures were replaced in the remodel, such as these freezer cases, but not all. You can see some older dairy cases, too.
It's unfortunate to see a remodel that doesn't really look like an improvement, but here, at least this decor package hasn't been used in subsequent stores.
