TOUR: Stop & Shop - Nanuet, NY

Stop & Shop
Opened: 2020
Previous Tenants: Fairway Market (2013-2019)
Location: 101 Market St E, Nanuet, NY
Photographed: August 12, 2022
Welcome to the current Stop & Shop in Nanuet! The store moved from a former Grand Union across the street in 2020, following the 2019 closure of Fairway in this space. We can take a look inside Fairway right before its opening thanks to an extensive photo gallery from Patch. The 66,000 square foot store became a Stop & Shop, and it's one of the nicest Stop & Shops in this area -- maybe even overall.
That said, there's a lot left from Fairway, and that's part of the reason it's very nice. We enter to a large, spacious produce department, with bakery, deli, and prepared foods behind that. Meat and seafood are on the back wall, with frozen/dairy on the right side and pharmacy -- something Fairway wouldn't have had -- in the front right corner.
And it has one of the newer Stop & Shop decor packages, which with its backlit signage looks great in this space. The high ceiling and dark color palette look really good, too.
Notice the flooring is left over from Fairway for sure! But Stop & Shop has replaced a lot if not all of the fixtures, and has definitely angled the selection more mainstream than Fairway. So I wouldn't say this is an exceptional transition from Fairway like some we've seen, but it's definitely a great Stop & Shop as far as Stop & Shops go.
And it does look like Stop & Shop realized this decor package was really bland, as some newer versions have some more exciting graphics like this one -- although I wish the whole store had more of the graphics like this.
Bakery is in an island behind produce as we transition into prepared foods and deli. All of those departments are a big downgrade from Fairway to Stop & Shop, but again, this is a better-than-average fresh food selection for Stop & Shop.
But it's obvious that the prepared foods and deli departments are much smaller now than Fairway's would have been.
Here's where I think the decor starts to need improvement: why is the whole wall so plain here? Why couldn't they have had something, anything, to accent the already very plain text?
Beer is opposite the deli department, on the back of the bakery island.
But the store is very spacious and very pleasant. I found myself picturing doing food shopping here and it felt like it would be very pleasant to shop in.
Stop & Shop seems to be bringing back service meat and seafood departments in their stores after downsizing or removing them for years, so that's nice to see.
The grocery aisles still have Fairway flooring but new shelving. They look pretty good and are plenty wide and spacious. The selection here, though, is no different from any other Stop & Shop.
Another example of a great graphic I wish there were more of around the store!
Here's a look across the front-end, with the pharmacy on the other end.
The HABA department looks really good, with lighting on the shelves much like newer ShopRites have.
As we transition into frozen foods at the right side of the store, there's one oddly wide aisle...
...but the frozen foods aisles are normal.
Notice a few different generations of frozen cases here, meaning that some may have been replaced when Stop & Shop moved in.
Dairy in the last aisle.
And another look at the front-end, which as Fairway set up does not connect to the grand aisle in the front (only in the middle and back).
This is a really nice Stop & Shop, but still not an exceptional supermarket. But tomorrow we have a look at what really is an exceptional supermarket, a little to the east along route 59, over on The Independent Edition (along with a former supermarket across the street on Grocery Archaeology). Come back to check it out!

  1. Is this the current decor package? There is a new Stop and Shop under construction in my town so maybe this is what they will use?

    1. Where is there a new S&S going up? I thought they were shrinking.

    2. Interesting. Is it replacing that tiny store at Powder Mill Road and High Street? I was there a few months ago and although it was renovated relatively recently it was obviously completely outdated. Also, you'll probably have a lot to say when we're up in Massachusetts in a few months! I'm preparing some posts in the southern Worcester County area now for later this spring, and hopefully you'll be able to give us lots of information about what you know in that area!

As for the decor package, it's hard to say. I believe S&S is still using this decor package for some remodels, but new stores seem to be getting a new decor package. This went into the newest location in Waterbury...

And yes, Stop & Shop does also seem to be shrinking, or at least stagnating. Ahold Delhaize appears to be having a rough patch in the US:

    3. Should clarify that the link I posted is not the Waterbury store but one in Quincy, MA, where S&S's headquarters are. Here's Waterbury: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xF9x1SK7ePqwc7yh9

    4. I would think that the store on powder mill will close when the new store opens, but I am not sure. I have heard that the old store may stay open. The new store will not be that big. I think that the Kmart was only 45k sqft
