This store might look like an average Stop & Shop, but it has a fascinating history. Stop & Shop first arrived on this property in the mid- to late-1950s with a smaller store closer to the street a little farther south, at 1065 Truman Parkway. That store would then be demolished and rebuilt in the late 1970s, in what I believe was a combination Stop & Shop supermarket with a Stop & Shop-owned Medi-Mart drugstore next door. By around 2010, after the Medi-Mart had long since become a Walgreens, that building was demolished once again. A new ground-up Stop & Shop and Walgreens were built, opening the following year or so, and actually occupying an ever so slightly different footprint from the previous building.
So this store (at least in its current iteration) is about as old as the Chelmsford store, and looks very similar although much smaller. At just 38,000 square feet, this one is a little more than half the size of the Chelmsford location.
The layout is different, though, but the decor looks almost exactly the same. It's a really beautiful store and still feels practically brand-new even though it's almost 15 years old at this point.
The grand aisle is on the right side of the store, with prepared foods, deli, and bakery lining the right-side wall. Seafood is at the back of the grand aisle, with meat on the rest of the back wall. Dairy and frozen are on the left side. There's no pharmacy, likely because of the Walgreens next door.
As of early 2024, the store had received new exterior signage, which is sometimes (but not always) a sign that the interior also received a renovation. This store certainly didn't need a renovation at the time I visited.
And you can tell this is a top store for Stop & Shop for several reasons. For one, obviously, it's been rebuilt and redone so many times. They simply wouldn't invest in the store so much if it weren't a great performer. Also, the amount of services and selection they pack into this relatively small store is thoroughly impressive. (Placer.ai estimates that this store gets more traffic than the larger Shaw's just north of it.)
This store is not even a quarter mile from Boston city limits, so it may also draw a lot of customers from the neighboring suburbs.
Even the grocery aisles are packed with dry goods.
This is maybe my favorite decor package that Stop & Shop has used. If it's maintained well -- which, here, it has been -- it doesn't look dated at all even though it was first used nearly 15 years ago.
And here, none of the letters are falling down or lights are burnt out.
And a look across the front-end...
This store also has a Citizens Bank branch in the front-left corner.
That's all for this Stop & Shop, and we're almost done with Hyde Park. We have just one more stop before we finish up, and that's about two miles north near the border with Roslindale!
