Vermont has a lot of general stores. Nobody tracks where the most general stores are, but it definitely feels like it would be (or should be) Vermont. These historic markets still dot the state, and some of them have become larger and closer to a small supermarket over time. That's the case just two miles west of here in Cambridge, and also true here in Jeffersonville. Hanley's General Store dates back to around 1900, and has now been expanded to around 7,000 square feet.
Like Cambridge Village Market, Hanley's is supplied by Associated Grocers Northeast.
Baked goods and nonfoods are up at the front near the registers (the baked goods are nice here, but not quite as good as Cambridge in my opinion). Produce and dairy are in the first aisle on the left side, with deli and meat at the back and frozen and beer/wine on the right side in the last aisle. That's where we start...
You can see this store has gotten some small updates over the years, including new refrigeration and flooring in some places, but as a whole it feels very similar to how it must have years (decades) ago. Check out the grocery aisle with the original ceiling and ceiling fan!
And while we're in Jeffersonville, it's not really a full grocery store, but I would recommend stopping by The Cupboard Deli. It's just a gas station convenience store but has a shockingly good bakery with some memorable donuts and a lot of other great sweets. Incidentally, we're only about eight miles west of Johnson here, so we made a big loop and are now back in the same area. The larger supermarket in this general area is to the south, and that'll be tomorrow's post!
