The Market Report

Okay, be ready for some very sloppy history reporting here. This store was a Waldbaum's until somewhere in the neighborhood of 2005-2007, when it changed ownership and became a Golden Mango Supermarket. I do know the store was at one point owned by a Korean owner (the writer of an article about businesses in Canarsie, a predominantly black neighborhood, seemed to be shocked to find that the store's owner was Korean. Uh... do your homework ). At some time around 2010, the store changed hands again and was taken over by either Raul Acosta or Andres Ferreira (who owns most Ideal Food Basket stores in New York City) and joined the NSA, or Neighborhood Supermarket Association, cooperative, which was transformed into Ideal/America's Food Basket. Then, by the summer of 2019, the store had gone through what seemed to be an extensive renovation and expansion, and the store's banner may have been switched from AFB Golden Mango to just straight Ideal Food Basket. Today's snapshot is the Food World Supermarket at 935 E 107th St at Flatlands Ave in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn. This one is in closest proximity to the Food Bazaar at Louisana Avenue and Flatlands Avenue, and you could have an argument whether this is technically East New York or Canarsie. Personally, I think it's Canarsie based on very little (but it is to the west of Fresh Creek, if only barely, and Canarsie is decidedly west of Fresh Creek. I don't know much about the history of this store other than the fact that it used to be a Met Foodmarket.

Just across the Linden Houses public housing project from the City Fresh Market we saw yesterday (and sharing ownership with it) is this store. Formerly a Pioneer Supermarket with one of the ugliest exteriors I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing, the supermarket has been turned into a sleek and modern store inside and out. The grand aisle (and boy is it grand) features produce on the left side, with deli/bakery, hot food/salad, seafood, and butcher along the right wall. Meats run along the back wall with frozen in the second-to-last aisle and dairy on the far side wall. Now prepare yourselves for the interior... No, it's not a sci-fi movie. It's just a Cherry Valley Marketplace. I don't believe we've ever seen a Cherry Valley quite like this one, and I don't believe one exists. This East New York supermarket is located off the main drag in East New York here at 655 Stanley Avenue in a quieter, more residential neighborhood. It is diagonally across from the Linden Houses, a public housing project, and is likely a convenience-based location. It was a Compare Foods until 2015. It's rather close to the Starrett City location as well, although that store is many times larger. Check out some interior views here , here , and here . Now for the post! This is a small corner supermarket in East New York, Brooklyn, measuring around 5600 square feet. But it wasn't always this small. Before the opening of this Shop Fair in 2017 or so, a larger space on the ground floor of this building was a Key Food from 2011 through about 2017. Upon Key Food's closure, the space was divided between this Shop Fair and a Dollar Tree of around 12,000 square feet. Now, the Dollar Tree has closed, and the Shop Fair is in the process of expanding back into the full space. Now based on my visit back in the summer of 2024, that expansion can't come a ...
