Antillana SuperFood Marketplace Owner: Jose Grullon Opened:  October 2023 Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Associated Supermarket Group Location:  1850 Jerome Ave, Morris Heights, Bronx, NY Photographed:  November 8, 2023 Just blocks from yesterday's CTown that just burned down , we are visiting a very different store -- a brand-new Antillana SuperFood. Around a third of a mile east of the CTown, this store recently opened in October, holding its grand opening on November 18th. While I'm not positive exactly how large the store is, it's rather large and I would say is likely the largest Antillana location out there. The Antillana group has quite a few stores: two Extra Jumbo Marketplace locations in Manhattan (3788 Broadway and 312 Audubon Ave) and one in the Bronx (1384 Nelson Ave), one Antillana SuperFood in Manhattan (3900 Broadway) and six in the Bronx (2285 Grand Concourse -- previously Bravo , 1339 Jerome Ave, 124 W Fordham Rd , 640 Pelham Pkwy S, 10...

Moving from Cape Cod to north central Massachusetts, we have a look at the small town of Ayer, MA! Unlike the Dennisport picture, I can definitely pinpoint where this picture was taken -- the train tracks give it away! (Those train tracks are now a rail trail, that I've biked up. Beautiful!) Unfortunately, though, most of these buildings no longer exist. And in case you missed it, take a look at that building on the left side of Main Street. That's the Union Cash Market! Now, Ayer doesn't have its Union Cash Market anymore, but they do have a strange  circular Shop 'n Save (well, technically the store is a tetradecagon, because it technically has 14 sides; had to do some Googling for that one). Welcome to Dennisport, MA, a small village within the town of Dennis on Cape Cod! This undated postcard shows a view of the quaint main street, featuring a Stop & Shop grocery store! I unfortunately haven't been able to pinpoint where this location was, but there was also an A&P in town at some point. A great picture! Tomorrow we have one more postcard before we wrap up the Back in Time feature!

CTown Supermarkets Owner: Juan Marte Open:  1988-Feb 2023 Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  1750 University Ave, Morris Heights, Bronx, NY Photographed:  November 8, 2023 In February, the CTown Supermarket on University Avenue in Morris Heights burned down in an overnight fire . The building was destroyed, but the 9500 square foot space -- now just an empty lot -- is being prepared for a new CTown. The sign shown here, at least, indicates they're planning to rebuild. Morris Heights more recently had a building partially collapse , and the various destruction of buildings around here might be due to the fact that so many of the buildings in this neighborhood are very old. I'll be sure to get back and check it out once the new store is built! We've spent plenty of time in Elizabeth, NJ, but we're back to check out some old family photos! My grandmother had literal boxes upon boxes of original pictures anywhere from 1950 or so up until recent years, and these come from the earlier side of that. First we have my great-grandmother and my aunt outside the local A&P, although I'm not positive exactly where this was. I do know that it was an A&P, though. Now a picture of my aunt outside of some store, although I'm not sure if it's the same one... I love these stacks of groceries in the window! Now we're headed back up to Massachusetts tomorrow for some more historical photos.

Trader Joe's Opened: November 7, 2023 Previous Tenants:  none; Waldbaum's and Key Food previously on site Location:  69-65 Yellowstone Blvd, Forest Hills, Queens, NY Photographed:  November 7, 2023 Welcome to Queens! We're here in Forest Hills -- just under eight miles east of Times Square -- where a Trader Joe's has recently opened in the basement of a new building. The original building on this property, though, had a Waldbaum's (at least according to a customer I spoke with) which later became a Key Food . I was here on opening day, November 7th, but unfortunately not for the official opening at 8. I was there around an hour and a half later. As we descend to the basement, we can get a beautiful overview of the store. To the right is most of the grocery store, with produce, meat, grocery, and deli items (although of course there's no deli). Frozen is basically straight back with floral across on the front walls. Giant Farmers Market Owner: Sang Kim Opened:  2018 Cooperative:  Retail Grocers Group Location:  19 Wyckoff Ave, Waldwick, NJ Photographed:  November 12, 2023 It's time for a quick update at the Waldwick Giant Farmers Market! We first saw it in 2020  and since then, it's gotten a minor renovation that shuffles around some of the departments and has turned it from a farmers market-type store with some groceries into a fairly straightforward supermarket with a disproportionately large produce department. Not all the change is positive, though, and some of the produce cases we can see below to the right were empty when I visited. Then again, there was some excellent produce and that appears to have been where the organic selection used to be. I was a bit concerned when I came back and saw those empty cases and then the mostly-empty bakery department in the back.
