TOUR: Weis Markets - Doylestown, PA

Weis Markets Opened:  2012 Previous Tenants:  Genuardi's (1988-2012) Location:  73 Old Dublin Pk, Doylestown, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 Northern Doylestown seems to be a place for some really nice supermarkets, as we'll see. It's likely because there are so many so close together. This Weis opened in 2012 in a former Genuardi's that they acquired, and initially left as it was. After a few years, as the GIANT Food Store nearby prepared to move into a new, larger location in a former Kmart, Weis began a renovation of this store. As we'll see, it's still got the bones of a Genuardi's, but it looks much more modern. We enter to the floral department in an island, with the spacious grand aisle to our right. Produce is in the front with beer/wine and the cafe in the front right corner, and deli/prepared foods on the right side of the grand aisle. The bakery lines the left side of the grand aisle, with meat and seafood on the back wall. The pharmacy is on the...

Snapshot: ACME Markets - Doylestown, PA

ACME Markets Opened: 1970s Previous Tenants:  Sears Location:  480 N Main St, Doylestown, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 Quick look today at the Doylestown ACME, about a mile north of downtown Doylestown. It's not a particularly remarkable store, and even though I didn't go in, luckily the A&P Preservation blogger got pictures of the store both with its PF&H and its Quality Built decor. The roughly 60,000 square foot store sits directly across the street from a former Genuardi's, now Weis. We'll be touring that store tomorrow, so come back to check it out!

203 W State St, Doylestown, PA

Original Grocery Tenant: Country Food Market Address: 203 W State St, Doylestown, PA Opened:  unknown Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  still Country Food Market; no longer a food store Photographed:  July 22, 2021 Well folks, today's store is a rather strange one. Anyone can look at this picture and know immediately that wasn't originally a food store; it was a diner . And a Jerry O'Mahony diner no less, manufactured in our favorite, Elizabeth, New Jersey. (For readers who may not be aware, Elizabeth is the city all of my family is from.) But it later became a florist shop and then the Country Food Market, a small convenience store. It's directly across the street from yesterday's Simply Fresh . Interestingly enough, it seems that McCaffrey's has actually bought this store and it's now more of a tobacco/news store, since I suppose it's redundant for McCaffrey's to have another grocery store right across the street. It still confuses me, though, sin...

TOUR: Simply Fresh by McCaffrey's - Doylestown, PA

Simply Fresh by McCaffrey's Owner: Jim McCaffrey III Opened:  2016 Cooperative:  none Location:  200 W State St, Doylestown, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 It's time for another McCaffrey's store! And as you can probably guess, this one is going to be just as spectacular as the others, if not more so. Everything in this store is packed into just 13,000 square feet in downtown Doylestown, and because of the store's smaller footprint and more perishables-focused product mix, it has been branded Simply Fresh by McCaffrey's. A building previously housing a historic Ford dealership has been beautifully renovated for this store. You can get an idea of this store's setup in these exterior pictures, as well as its position right on a downtown street. The store is more or less divided into two halves. When you enter the store, from the entrance about halfway to the back of the store on the side facing the parking lot, you encounter the floral department on your left an...
