220 E Diamond Ave, Hazleton, PA

Original Grocery Tenant: A&P Address: 220 E Diamond Ave, Hazleton, PA Opened:  1950s Closed:  after 1976 Later Tenants:  Dollar General Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Just a few doors down from yesterday's Mi Tierra , we see this 15,400 square foot Dollar General, the building of which was originally occupied by A&P. It appears that the A&P was built as a roughly 9,000 square foot barrel-roof building in the 1950s before closing at some point after 1976, probably in the 80s. I'm not sure if there was another grocery store here between A&P and Dollar General, or what else was in the space during that time. Up next we're headed towards West Hazleton, about a mile and a half northwest from here, for the Boyer's in town on The Market Report !

Look Inside: Mi Tierra Supermarket - Hazleton, PA

Mi Tierra Supermarket Owner: unknown Opened:  2017 Cooperative:  America's Food Basket Location:  304 E Diamond Ave, Hazleton, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Welcome back and I hope you had a great weekend! Today we're going to be taking a look at one of the smaller supermarkets around Hazleton, of which there are several. Among many others are the Associate's Grocery & Meat Market and the Penn City Supermarket . This Mi Tierra, which appears to be loosely related to the stores in Queens , was previously the M&D Supermarket and opened in 2017 affiliated with Krasdale Foods, like the Queens stores. In 2022 or so, the store left Krasdale and joined America's Food Basket, along with the Hazleton Food Supermarket . There's a small parking lot for the store one door down from it, and the store is actually larger than it looks at a fairly hefty 8500 square feet. Obviously that's not gigantic, but it's bigger than the little convenience store it look...

Snapshot: MyTown Supermarket - Hazleton, PA

MyTown Supermarket Owner: Luis Payano Opened:  2013-2023 Cooperative:  none Location:  46 E Broad St, Hazleton, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Quick look today at the MyTown Supermarket in Hazleton, no relation to the MyTown Marketplace in the Hudson Valley of New York. In early 2023 this 3300 square foot store became the Enger Supermarket. Up next we are taking a look inside a small supermarket a few blocks north of here right here on The Independent Edition on Monday!

Snapshot: C&P Store - Hazleton, PA

C&P Store Owner: Divyenkumen Patel Opened:  2001-2021 Cooperative:  none Location:  118 Chestnut St, Hazleton, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Today's snapshot is a quick look at a former grocery store, one of those that probably used to be more of a full supermarket but became more of a bodega/convenience store over the years. The store was only 2,000 square feet, and appears to have opened under this ownership in 2001. It was definitely also open as C&P Store going back to 1996, but I can't confirm anything before that. However, I suspect it was open as a grocery store of some form for a very long time before that. The store closed in 2021. Our next stop is just a few blocks north here on The Independent Edition tomorrow!

601 S Poplar St, Hazleton, PA

Original Grocery Tenant: Heritage ShurSave Address: 601 S Poplar St, Hazleton, PA Opened:  2007 Closed:  2018 Later Tenants:  none Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Our first store in Hazleton is in the southern part of the city, and is unfortunately a grocery store that closed some time ago. You can still make out the word Heritage that remains on the roof, and Heritage Fresh Foods (a ShurSave affiliate) previously occupied some of the building. Before that it was the Pocono Market Faire, and originally an industrial building. The Heritage supermarket opened in 2007 along with a dollar store as part of the supposed reinvention of the location, with a buffet and restaurant later opening and subsequently closing less than a year later in 2011. What amounts to an indoor amusement park was also planned, but as far as I can tell, never constructed in the 170,000 square foot building. Today, the building is mostly vacant. Now we're heading into the downtown area from the...

TOUR: Boyer's Food Markets - McAdoo, PA

Boyer's Food Markets Owner: Dean Walker Opened:  ca. 1980s Previous Tenants:  unknown Location:  318 S Hancock St, McAdoo, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 For our first post back from summer break, we'll be checking out -- shocker -- a Boyer's in the Coal Region! We've seen quite a few Boyer's in the past few months, and there are a few more before we move on from this area. It's not clear who built this store, but we know that definitely from 1977 to 1988 (plus probably a little more time on either side) it was an IGA Foodliner owned by Nick Zukovich. At some point after that, Boyer's took it over (possibly when Boyer's was still IGA-affiliated, and they later switched to Great Valu before becoming completely independent). In fact, you can still kind of see the outline of the Great Valu lettering behind the Food Markets and Makes you feel so good! lettering. Heading in, this looks a lot like a lot of the other Boyer's of this generation we'...

Coming Soon!

Welcome back from summer break! We are back in the Coal Region now, where we  left off  before the Harrisburg area, and in fact our first stop is just under 10 miles from Mahanoy City. Most of our time in this part of the Coal Region will be spent in and around Hazleton, with a few stops outside the city in White Haven, Freeland, Conyngham, and Berwick, from east to west. Hazleton has an interesting mix of supermarkets, ranging from little independent grocers that have been in business for a long time to newcomers from outside the city, and we'll be seeing eight interesting current and former stores in Hazleton before checking out the others. We'll be spending just under three weeks here, and then we're headed north. Head over to  The Market Report  tomorrow to check out our first stop just to the south of Hazleton!

Update: Save-A-Lot - Orange, NJ

Save-A-Lot Owner: unknown Opened:  2018 Previous Tenants:  none Location:  200 Central Ave, City of Orange, NJ Photographed:  June 22, 2023 We return to the Save-A-Lot in Orange (where we first stopped about two years ago ) to see the inside, and to check out how the store is doing, five years into its life. Save-A-Lot doesn't have a lot of presence in northern New Jersey, and this store was one of several that made up their push into this part of the state. Shortly thereafter, as Save-A-Lot transitioned to a wholesaler from a retailer, the store was sold although I'm not sure who the buyer was. Save-A-Lot no longer owns the store, but instead acts as the franchisor to whoever owns it now. The store is quite plain if fairly modern and attractive. I do like this decor setup, although I wish it had a little more going for it (like some food pictures or something). And although the produce department is fairly well-stocked, it doesn't have a very large selection and th...
