Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in November 2017, but was rewritten with new photos in March 2026. Now for the post! What makes a supermarket a Super Supermarket? Actually, that's up for debate. In fact, a
recent lawsuit centered around the fact that the name "Super Supermarket" was too generic to have much trade value. So as a result, New Jersey has at least three different operators who use the name Super Supermarket. Other than the fact that they're all supplied by the same wholesaler, they have nothing in common.
The West New York location here shares ownership with one in
Elizabeth, while locations in
Orange, Paterson, and Haledon share ownership but one in
Newark is independent. This particular store was a variety of independent grocers in the last 25 years or so, most recently an Associated Supermarket until about 2014.
This store is small but very well-stocked. The produce department is in the front-right corner, with dairy continuing down the rest of the first aisle. Service butcher/deli is on the back wall, with packaged meats and frozen foods in the last aisle on the left side.
The store spans just 7600 square feet, making it less than half the size of
Extra two blocks away. But there's a full line of groceries here.
I said it in my original post eight years ago and I'll say it again: this store might be small and old-school, but it's absolutely immaculate. Look at these grocery aisles!
This store mostly doesn't have storebrand items, but I saw a few Parade and Life Goods/Life Every Day items from General Trading.
Cold cuts, meat, and frozen foods in the last aisle. Some of these cases are definitely on the newer side.
Per the archive at
Newspapers.com, this has been a supermarket since at least 2000. But in the 1950s, this building was home to a rubber factory, and by the 1980s, it was a leather clothing manufacturer and store.
I'm intrigued by the flooring here and I wonder if it's from some past tenant. Although it's in generally very good shape, it looks older than 2000 to me.
Two registers and a little customer service counter up at the front of the store. And that brings us to the end of this Super Supermarket!
