Today, The Market Report heads down to South Jersey to a Philadelphia suburb, Cherry Hill, to check out the new Asianfresh supermarket here. Asianfresh has had a store in Philadelphia's Chinatown for a while, but last month opened its second location just across the Delaware. It's rather large, measuring somewhere around 40,000 square feet -- around the same size as the newly-reopened H Mart here in Cherry Hill, though that store (which is around a mile and a half west on Marlton Pike) is on two floors and includes a food court in its total footprint, which this one does not.
This store certainly feels big, with a sprawling layout in a former furniture store that was once part of a Clover discount store. You enter in the front-left corner to the produce department with the registers to your right. Grocery aisles are straight back, with meat and seafood on the back wall. Frozen is on the right side wall. It's a little bit of an L-shape, since the back half of the store is wider than the front half.
While the Philly Asianfresh -- which I've been to but not yet posted -- feels cramped and hectic, this one is extremely spacious. By my estimations, the Philadelphia location is only around 7,000 square feet, with about 3500 on each of its two floors.
That store opened in 2020, and it wasn't previously a supermarket. It doesn't feel dated, but definitely no longer feels like a new grocery store. This one has a completely different, sleek and modern look that I imagine will keep it looking fresh for years.
You'll hardly see any customers in these pictures, and the store really was quite quiet when I visited at around 11 am on a weekday. I would expect it gets busier at other times, but I'm not sure. This strip mall is pretty desolate, although there are a few other tenants. A new supermarket here might help to draw more traffic in.
Frozen foods take up the right side of the back half of the store. While the space doesn't feel too large, it's also clear they're trying to fill some of the space with things like this large section of items on pallets.
Looking back up towards the front of the produce department...
This is a really nice supermarket, and it feels appealing and modern in a way that the other Asianfresh doesn't. But in a much less dense, busy neighborhood than the other location, it remains to be seen whether this store can establish a solid customer base. There's a lot more to see this weekend, so check it out here!

  1. This store occupies a weird spot in the local market. H Mart draws people in with the new food court, and Hung Vuong is massive with a great selection.

I've been here once, and found the produce quality to be so-so. That's not great for a store that was, at that point, open less than 2 weeks. I'm just not sure who is coming here over the other two Asian markets in Cherry Hill.
